Medieval Germany

Establishment of the Carolingian Empire in 800 AD by Charlemagne was torn apart into two half leading to the establishment of the East Francia and later the Holy Roman Empire. At the same time, trade flourished but side-by-side citizens had to face a drastic downfall due to Great Famine of 1315 and the Black Death from 1348 to 1450.

The Collapse of Holy Empire

At the dawn of 19th century The Holy Empire collapsed leading to 39 loosely associated states by the German Confederation which was formed in 1815. The North German Confederation succeeded the formation of its associated states in 1866 due to strains between Austria and Prussia. Otto von Bismarck leaded these states to unify into the German Empire, with Kaiser Wilhelm I as emperor. Their nationalism and ambitions played a significant role in the outbreak of World War I in 1914.
