Your Card To Endless Choices
Germany, known for its strong economy, high quality of life, and diverse work opportunities, has introduced a game-changing immigration policy for skilled workers: the Chancenkarte or "Opportunity Card." If you’re looking to build your career in Germany but don’t yet have a concrete job offer, this new visa pathway might be your ideal entry point.
What Is the Chancenkarte?
The Chancenkarte is a points-based immigration program introduced in 2024 by the German government. Its primary aim is to lure qualified foreign workers from outside the EU by enabling them to come to Germany for as long as one year to look for work without a prior job offer.
It's a reaction to the increasing need for qualified experts in industries such as IT, engineering, healthcare, and skilled trades. The Chancenkarte is a more open and transparent means of immigrating to Germany and seeking employment while remaining in the country legally.
Who Can Apply for the Chancenkarte?
To qualify, applicants must either:
Possess a recognised vocational or academic qualification (a minimum of two years of training or a university degree),
AND
Possess minimum German language abilities (A1) or English skills (B2)
Once the initial qualification is satisfied, the Chancenkarte is awarded under a points system with a minimum requirement of 6 points to be eligible.
Chancenkarte Points System
Points are issued in a variety of categories. Here's where you can score them:
1. Professional Qualification
2 points: Your qualification is fully recognised in Germany.
1 point: Your foreign qualification is partly recognised and you have to finish adaptation measures.
2. Work Experience
2 points: Not less than 5 years of professional experience in the past 7 years.
1 point: Not less than 2 years of professional experience.
3. Age
2 points: You are not over 35 years old.
1 point: You are between 35 and 40.
4. Language Skills
1 point: German at level A2.
2 points: German at B1 or more.
5. Earlier Stay in Germany
1 point: If you have earlier stayed in Germany legally for 6 months or more (e.g., for study, language course, or earlier work).
6. Spouse Accompanying You
1 point: If your spouse also meets the requirements and applies with you.
The greater the number of points you score, the better your chances of obtaining the Chancenkarte.

Yes, provided your main purpose is job hunting, you can undertake temporary courses, particularly employment assistance ones.
Tips to Enhance Your Chancenkarte Application
Enhance your German: Levels A2 or B1 can greatly boost your points.
Have qualifications recognised: Utilize Germany's Anabin database for degree recognition.
Document your work experience: Employer letters and contracts assist in proving experience.
Save up: Demonstrating financial security is important; it may be worth opening a blocked account (Sperrkonto) ahead of time.
